Great Summer Job Ideas for College Students

A summer job doesn't have to be boring. You don't have to work at a fast food place washing dishes, or babysit your neighbor's kids. You can get out into the real word and gain some work experience that will help your career, build your resume, and provide valuable skills.

Here are some great ideas for a summer job. The weather is just starting to warm up, but now is the time to start securing a summer job. Don't wait!

Paid Internship

Internships do not have to be unpaid. There are plenty of opportunities out there to get your foot in the door AND get paid. Check out some of the companies and industries you are interested in and ask if they have internships. Many of them have a selection process that starts weeks before summer, so don't waste any time getting the info. Be prepared to interview too!

Work Outside

If you like to be outside during the summer, there are plenty of summer jobs that provide fresh air and sunshine. 

• Parks and Recreation. There are thousands of opportunities, from entry level to graduate level, for students to work with the National Park Service. 
• Lifeguard. This position require a certification. Then you can work at many different types of businesses like a YMCA, country club, beach, day camp, or resort.
• Landscaper or Groundskeeper. There is plenty of lawn maintenance to do in the warmer months. Build strength, skills, a tan, and customer service skills. It's a great workout! 
• Golf course. There are a lot of different types of jobs at golf courses and country clubs. If you like golf or just being outside, this could be a lot of fun. 

Work with Kids

If you are studying Youth Ministry or Early Childhood Education, a summer internship or job working with children is ideal. These types of experiences will definitely give you skills and references.

Work with Animals

If you really love animals, there are plenty of opportunities to work furry or feathered friends. Even if you aren't doing into the animal sciences as a career, working with animals can give you a valuable life skills and experiences.

Food Service Jobs

It has been said that everyone should work at least once in food service to gain an understanding and perspective on just how demanding it can be. However, food service also provides invaluable insight into working with people. solving problems, time management, and service work. And it can be really fun!
